When Everything Fell Into Place: A Lago di Braies Elopement
They wanted their wedding to be about them. Not managing expectations. Not keeping everyone else happy. Just the two of them.

They inquired for Switzerland. Booked me for Austria. We landed in the Dolomites. Through every shift in their elopement planning, one thing stayed constant: Lago di Braies, often called Lake Braies in English and known for its turquoise water, wooden boathouse, and dramatic mountain backdrop. The lake was non-negotiable. Everything else would unfold from there.
Unpredictable October
The second half of October in the Dolomites offers no guarantees. Most mountain huts had already closed for the season. Most cable cars had stopped running. Weather forecasts shifted daily, sometimes hourly. The summer crowds had thinned. What remained was uncertainty and the quiet awareness that we were working with whatever conditions the mountains decided to offer.
We planned for rain. Packed for cold. Arranged a four-wheel drive into the mountains anyway. What we got was the Dolomites at their finest.
We arrived at Lago di Braies early, before the crowds, before the rhythm of the day changed. The parking area was nearly empty. The lake stretched out in front of us, impossibly still. Light moved across the water slowly, revealing layers of color I had never seen there before. Deep blues shifted into pale greens. The reflection of Croda del Becco held perfectly on the surface.
They changed in the boathouse we’d rented for the morning. No rush. Just the quiet awareness that something important was beginning.
Words That Took Their Time
Standing on the dock, they spoke with care. Not to perform. Not to impress. Just to say what needed to be said. The date held meaning beyond the obvious. Their engagement anniversary. The foundation they were building on had already proven itself strong. These vows were simply making it official.
They had mentioned their vows would be short. They weren’t.
Afterwards, we stepped into a wooden boat and drifted out onto the water. The lake stretched wide and quiet around us. Time slowed. The moment stretched so perfectly that I read what was unfolding and made the call. I sent the drone up, even though we had agreed not to. Some experiences deserve to be captured from every angle, especially when conditions align this completely.
As we returned to shore, clouds rolled in quickly. The lake disappeared behind them just as fast as it had revealed itself. What we had witnessed belonged to that window of time alone.
Note: Drones are not permitted at Lago di Braies unless you rent the boathouse during early morning hours. Always check with the rental organization first.

Following What the Day Gave
After Lago di Braies, the plan had been to head into a town center. But it became clear quickly that it wasn’t what they wanted. The attention felt loud after such a quiet morning, and the crowds were already building. So we changed course. Instead of a busy city, we drove into a lesser-visited valley in the Italian Alps, close to the Dolomites but far from the noise. Space returned. Shoulders dropped. The day softened again.
We drove to the end of a narrow valley and continued on foot. A short hike into a car-free pocket, where larch trees were turning gold. Late October is the brief window when these forests glow before winter strips them bare. The light filtered through branches in that particular way it only does in autumn. Warm. Softening everything it touched.
Plans shifted as conditions changed. We moved between locations, reading the weather, choosing routes based on what would serve them best. No rigid schedule. Just responsive guidance shaped by years of wandering in these mountains.
Dawn at Cinque Torri
The second morning of their elopement came early. We met before dawn for the four-wheel drive up into the mountains. The roads too rough for regular vehicles. The air cold enough that breath turned visible.
Cinque Torri rose around us as first light approached. Five stone towers standing against the sky. The kind of landscape that feels both ancient and immediate. Ice coated the ground. Every surface caught the approaching light and turned it luminous.
Dawn deep in the Dolomites sharpens your awareness. Cold air in your lungs. Stillness everywhere else. The sense that the world is awake before most people ever see it.
As the sun broke the horizon, the peaks turned pink, then gold, then settled into the clear light of morning. They stood together watching it unfold. No need to fill the quiet with words.
Above the Clouds
From Cinque Torri, we continued higher to Averau. What we found was a sea of clouds filling the valleys below. The peaks rising like islands. That rare mountain phenomenon where you stand above weather instead of in it. The world reduced to stone, sky, and the soft white of clouds stretching to the horizon.
Again, as we finished, conditions began to shift. Clouds that had stayed below started rising. The clear window closing just as we wrapped up. Not a disruption. Just confirmation that timing matters.
An Evening Between Vines and Stars
That evening, we met one last time in Brixen. The city sits in South Tyrol, below the high Dolomite peaks. Vineyards climb the hillsides. Old architecture lines the streets. A place that feels settled in a way the high peaks never do.
The rooftop sat at the same level as the lowest vineyard rows. An odd perspective. Looking across at vines, then down at the city below. The evening air was surprisingly warm. October refusing to let go of summer just yet. They stood at the edge, watching the city lights and the stars above. More than expected. Brighter than the city lights should have allowed. The kind of easy laughter that comes after days spent fully present. Not because everything went according to plan, but because it was more than they’d expected.
What Actually Mattered
This Dolomites elopement wasn’t about intensity. It wasn’t about spectacle. It wasn’t about proving anything. It was about choosing what actually mattered to them: A wedding without noise. Trust in the unfolding. Joy showing up in simple, real ways. Vows that were meant to be short but needed more time. A lake that showed everything, then disappeared. Sunrise among stone towers. Clouds below Averau. Stars over a city where you’d expect light pollution.
They didn’t force any of it. They chose what mattered and let the rest unfold. Sometimes, when you trust the unfolding, everything falls into place.
